The Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks collide at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.
The Detroit Pistons been mired in a slump at just the wrong time of the season as they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games but they do get one last chance to secure a playoff berth after beating the Grizzlies by 100-93 at home last night. Ish Smith led the team in scoring with 22 points and four assists off the bench, Andre Drummond added 20 points with 17 rebounds, five steals and three blocks while Luke Kennard chipped in with 15 points. As a team, the Pistons shot just 39 percent from the field and 10 of 34 from the 3-point line as they looked dead in the water after getting outscored by 57-38 in the first half. However, the Pistons were able to stay alive until the fourth quarter where they outscored the Grizzlies by 35-14 to keep hold of the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. With the win, Detroit improved to 40-41 overall and 26-15 at home.
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks have been in a slump as they’ve lost eight of their last 11 games, but they will be looking to cap off a forgettable season with a third straight victory after last night’s 96-86 road win at Chicago. Dennis Smith Jr. led the team with 25 points and five assists, Kevin Knox added 17 points with 10 rebounds while Damyean Dotson and Luke Kornet each scored 12 points. As a team, the Knicks shot just 39 percent from the field and 14 of 40 from the 3-point line as the set the tone with 39 points in the first quarter, before limiting the Bulls to just 36 points in the second half as they escaped with the win to improve to 17-64 overall and 8-33 on the road.
Looking at the betting trends, the Pistons are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games against a team with a losing record, 12-5 ATS in their last 17 road games against a team with a losing home record and 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall. The Knicks are 20-41 ATS in their last 61 home games, 7-18 ATS in their last 25 games against a team with a losing record and 18-38 ATS in their last 56 games overall.
Head to head, the over is 5-1 in the last six meetings, the road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the Pistons are 8-22 ATS in the last 30 meetings in New York.
The Pistons need this win to secure a playoff berth, but they’ve fallen into a hole at the wrong time and it could cost them the season. Blake Griffin has been nursing knee soreness and his status will come down to a game-time decision. The Knicks have next to nothing to play for at this stage of the season, but that hasn’t stopped them from winning their last two games, so an upset isn’t out of the question. I do think the Pistons get the win here, but I don’t think they get the cover as the pesky Knicks hang around till the end in their last game of the season.
