The San Jose Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks meet in NHL action from the Rogers Arena on Tuesday night.
The San Jose Sharks will look to rebound after a 5-3 loss to Calgary in their last outing. Timo Meier opened the scoring for the Sharks just after the midway point of the opening period before Calgary stormed back with 3 goals in a span of 1:15. The Flames pushed the lead to 4-1 with the lone goal of the 2nd period. Logan Couture brought it back to 4-2 before Calgary restored the three-goal cushion. Kevin Labanc made it 5-3 but that’s as close as San Jose would get as Calgary slammed the door shut the rest of the way to seal the win. Aaron Dell took the loss, falling to 9-8-4 after allowing all 5 goals on 28 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Vancouver Canucks will look to build on back-to-back wins after a 3-2 shootout win over Dallas in their last outing. Tim Schaller and Sven Baertschi staked the Canucks an early 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, and would hold on to that lead through the 2nd and most of the 1st half of the 3rd period. Dallas would come back to tie the game at two with less than six minutes to go, and neither side would find a winning in the remainder of regulation. Overtime solved nothing, so it was off to a shootout. The first 14 shooters missed before Markus Granlund found the shootout winner in the 8th round. Jacob Markstrom got the win to improve to 28-22-9 after stopping 38 of 40 shots faced in the winning effort.
San Jose is 1-8 in their last 9 games overall and 9-4 in their last 13 road games while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 division games. Vancouver is 4-12 in their last 16 games against a team with a winning record and 19-46 in their last 65 division games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 home games. San Jose is 40-19 in the last 59 meetings between these two teams and 21-8 in the last 29 meetings between these two teams in Vancouver.
The plus money with Vancouver is tempting given how poorly the Sharks have played as of late, but the fact is that the Sharks have owned the Canucks in this matchup and have gotten the upper hand on Vancouver in recent meetings. San Jose hasn’t been playing like a team that should be favored on the road, but they’re still the team with something to play for and should be the play here.
