The Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators meet Saturday in game five of the NHL first round at the Bridgestone Arena.
The Dallas Stars look for back-to-back victories to take a 3-2 series lead heading into game six. The Dallas Stars are averaging 2.7 goals per game and are scoring on 21 percent of their power play opportunities. Mats Zuccarello leads Dallas with three goals, John Klingberg has five assists and Alexander Radulov has 20 shots on goal. Defensively, the Dallas Stars are allowing two goals per game and are killing 100 percent of their opponents power plays. Ben Bishop has given up eight goals on 127 shots faced. The Dallas Stars have allowed three or less goals in 22 of their last 23 games.
The Nashville Predators look for their second home win of the playoffs to go up 3-2 in the series. The Nashville Predators are averaging two goals per game and are scoring on zero percent of their power play opportunities. Rocco Grimaldi leads Nashville with two goals, Nick Bonino has two assists and P.K. Subban has 14 shots on goal. Defensively, the Nashville Predators are allowing 2.7 goals per game and are killing 78.9 percent of their opponents power plays. Pekka Rinne has given up 10 goals on 102 shots faced and Juuse Saros has allowed one goal on 21 shots. The Nashville Predators have allowed three or less goals in 13 of their last 16 games.
The Stars are 29-60 in their last 89 games as a road underdog, 5-2 in their last 7 games as an underdog and 3-7 in their last 10 playoff games as an underdog. The Predators are 4-1 in their last 5 games as a favorite, 1-4 in their last 5 playoff games as a favorite and 5-2 in their last 7 games playing on 2 days rest. The Stars are 4-9 in the last 13 meetings and the favorite is 35-17 in the last 52 meetings. The under is 33-12-6 in Stars last 51 overall. The under is 11-3-2 in Predators last 16 overall.
The Dallas Stars are so consistent defensively that they're always worth a look in the underdog role, and they've actually won five of their last six road games as an underdog. The problem is I have a hard time betting against the Nashville Predators at home during the playoffs based on their history and a feisty home crowd. The Predators have won 15 of their last 22 home playoff games as a favorite. Neither team has been able to take control of this series, so this has the feel of being a back and forth seven game series with the home team having the edge in each matchup. I'll side with the Predators.
