NHL | Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames
Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports
The Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames meet Friday in game five of the NHL first round at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Colorado Avalanche look for a fourth straight victory to advance to the next round. The Colorado Avalanche are averaging three goals per game and are scoring on 15 percent of their power play opportunities. Nathan MacKinnon leads Colorado with three goals, Mikko Rantanen has three assists and Gabriel Landeskog has 19 shots on goal. Defensively, the Colorado Avalanche are allowing 2.5 goals per game and are killing 73.7 percent of their opponents power plays. Philipp Grubauer has allowed nine goals on 134 shots. The Colorado Avalanche have allowed three or less goals in 13 of their last 15 games.
The Calgary Flames need a victory here if they’re going to force a game six on Sunday. The Calgary Flames are averaging 2.5 goals per game and are scoring on 26.3 percent of their power play opportunities. Matthew Tkachuk leads Calgary with two goals, Sam Bennett has three assists and Mikael Backlund has 14 shots on goal. Defensively, the Calgary Flames are allowing three goals per game and are killing 85 percent of their opponents power plays. Mike Smith has allowed 12 goals on 173 shots. The Calgary Flames have allowed three or more goals in seven of their last 11 games.
The Avalanche are 9-1 in their last 10 games playing on 1 days rest, 8-18 in their last 26 games as an underdog and 26-69 in their last 95 games as a road underdog. The Flames are 23-11 in their last 34 games as a home favorite, 1-5 in their last 6 playoff games as a favorite and 1-5 in their last 6 games as a favorite. The Avalanche are 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in Calgary and 4-9 in the last 13 meetings. The under is 14-5 in Avalanche last 19 overall. The under is 5-1 in Flames last 6 overall.
The home team has won seven of the last nine meetings between the Avalanche and Flames. The Calgary Flames have won 16 of their last 24 games as a home favorite and have won 13 of their last 19 home games when a favorite of at least -150. The Colorado Avalanche have fought hard in this series to build this lead, which includes two overtime wins, and they've actually won five of their last 11 road games as an underdog. There's value with the road dog in this spot. Still, the Flames usually take care of business on their home ice in the favorite role and as the better team this season, I doubt they have their year end on their home ice. I like there being a game six.
