The Winnipeg Jets and the Arizona Coyotes meet in NHL action from the Gila River Arena on Saturday night.
The Winnipeg Jets will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after a 3-2 overtime loss to Colorado in their last outing. Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers staked Winnipeg an early 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, but Colorado would cut the deficit in half with the lone goal of the 2nd period and would tie the game with the only goal in the 3rd period. Colorado scored the OT winner less than two minutes into the extra frame to take the win and send Winnipeg back with just a single point to show for their efforts. Connor Hellebuyck took the loss, falling to 33-23-3 after allowing all 3 goals on 38 shots faced in the losing effort.
The Arizona Coyotes will look to finish the season on a high note after picking up a 4-1 win over Vegas in their last outing, but still be eliminated from playoff contention. Vegas opened the scoring late in the 1st period but Richard Panik would tie the game at one for the visiting Coyotes just :57 later. Derek Stepan would give Arizona the lead and add an insurance goal 8:31 apart before Conor Garland stretched the lead to 4-1, giving the Coyotes the lead that they would ride to the finish for the victory. Darcy Kuemper got the win, improving to 27-20-8 after stopping 37 of 38 shots faced in the winning effort.
Winnipeg is 1-5 in their last 6 games overall and 46-22 in their last 68 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 road games. Arizona is 10-3 in their last 13 home games and 3-7 in their last 10 games overall while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games against the Western Conference. Winnipeg is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
It’s hard for me to imagine Arizona being up for this game after coming to close in the playoff race and being eliminated with their own fate out of their hands. However, the fan base stood behind the Coyotes all throughout this run and Arizona has been solid at home lately and will most likely want to pay it back by finishing the season with a win. Winnipeg has almost been on auto-pilot since clinching a playoff spot and haven’t been playing their best hockey as of late, so I’ll take a shot with Arizona and the plus money on Saturday night.
