The Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox meet in game one of their three game set in MLB action from Fenway Park on Friday night.
The Houston Astros will look to stay hot after winning eight straight and 11 of their last 12 games following a 5-1 win in their series finale with Detroit on Wednesday. Jake Marisnick went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs while Alex Bregman had a solo home run and Robinson Chirinos had a double and an RBI. George Springer had an RBI to round out Houston’s scoring in the win while Carlos Correa and Josh Reddick each had two hits in the winning effort. Justin Verlander got the win to improve to 7-1 on the year after allowing one run on two hits while striking out nine over seven innings of work. Gerrit Cole will start game one and is 4-4 with a 3.88 ERA and 86 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 24 strikeouts against Boston.
The Boston Red Sox will look to keep their own momentum going after winning 12 of their last 15 games including a 6-5 win in their series finale against Colorado on Wednesday. J.D. Martinez had a home run and three RBIs while going 2 for 4 at the dish while Michael Chavis and Mookie Betts each had an RBI with Betts going 3 for 5 with a double. Andrew Benintendi went 2 for 4 with a triple while Xander Bogaerts had a double. Christian Vazquez went 2 for 4 while Jackie Bradley Jr. added a base hit of his own in the victory. Eduardo Rodriguez allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out ten over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Brandon Workman got the win to improve his record to 3-1 on the year. Rick Porcello will start game one and is 3-3 with a 5.15 ERA and 40 strikeouts this season. In his career, Porcello is 2-1 with a 5.12 ERA and 26 strikeouts against Houston.
Houston is 5-2 in Cole’s last 7 starts and 61-28 in their last 89 games overall while the over is 7-1-1 in their last 9 games against a right-handed starter. Boston is 5-0 in Porcello’s last 5 starts and 6-1 in their last 7 games overall while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 home games. Houston is 0-4 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
I don’t think you could go wrong making a case for either side on Friday. Getting Boston as a home dog is tempting and even more so when you consider that the Red Sox have won each of Porcello’s last five starts. However, Porcello had some issues against a Seattle team that’s been slumping lately. Cole has been up and down in his own right, and the Red Sox are a definite step up in competition after beating up on Texas, Kansas City and Detroit during this winning stretch, but Houston’s been solid all around over the last couple of weeks, so while I’ll personally leave this game alone, I think the Astros have to be the play given their current form.
