The Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians meet in game one of a four game set in MLB action from Progressive Field on Thursday.
The Baltimore Orioles will look to rebound after losing both legs of a doubleheader with the Yankees on Wednesday, dropping game one by a final score of 5-3 while losing the second half 3-1. In game one, Trey Mancini and Renato Nunez each had a solo home run while Joey Rickard and Austin Wynns each had two hits including a double with Wynns adding an RBI. In game two, Rickard had another double while Hanser Alberto had the lone RBI in the loss for the O’s. David Hess took the loss in game one, falling to 1-5 after allowing all five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out six over six innings of work while Andrew Cashner took the loss in game two, falling to 4-2 after giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings of work. Dan Straily will start game one and is 1-3 with an 8.23 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. In his career, Straily is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts against Cleveland.
The Cleveland Indians will look to build some steam after settling for a series split with the White Sox, taking a 9-0 win over Chicago in their last outing. Jordan Luplow had a pair of home runs with three RBIs while Jose Ramirez, Jake Bauers and Roberto Perez each launched solo bombs. Jason Kipnis went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI while Carlos Santana had an RBI of his own. Leonys Martin chipped in a base knock of his own to finish off Cleveland’s offense in the victory. Carlos Carrasco got the win to improve to 4-3 after seven shutout innings, allowing six hits while matching that with six strikeouts. Trevor Bauer will start game one and is 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA and 72 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bauer is 1-4 with a 5.45 ERA and 35 strikeouts against Baltimore.
Baltimore is 10-43 in their last 53 series opening games and 29-86 in their last 115 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record. Cleveland is 17-8 in Bauer’s last 25 home starts and 6-0 in their last 6 games against the AL East while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games overall. Baltimore is 2-10 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams and 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Cleveland while Cleveland is 1-5 in Bauer’s last 6 starts against Baltimore.
The plus money with Baltimore is kind of tempting when you look at Bauer’s history against the O’s. However, Straily has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts spanning just 8.2 innings, and the Orioles are looking like the cellar dweller that we expected to see this season. Cleveland has had ups and downs in their own right, but Bauer has been arguably the Indians’ best pitcher so far this season. I’ll side with Cleveland to win the opener and to negate the heavy juice, I’ll side with Cleveland on the run line.
